Electric Skateboard
Waterproofed & capable of 40+ MPH

I began and completed this project during my first semester(Fall 2019) at the University of Florida. In hindsight(as with most of my earlier projects), I regret failing to document the research, BOM, problems, and adaptations that were made. The reasoning behind this project was two-fold, the first was I desired a convenient & quick way of navigating my university's campus. The second, I wanted a higher level of performance than commercially available. The big name in the electric skateboard market was Boosted and at the time their performance boards had top speeds of around 25 mph with a total range of 12-15 miles. I wanted more, so I set up to design something that ended up being capable of around a 45 mph top speed and a range closer to 20 miles. The background research consisted of primarily digging deep into random internet forums and exchanges of individuals that had already done something similar. I collected a list of parts, had the battery cells soldered together and BMS attached for me. The motor mounts used and existing design but were CNC'd and powder coated for me. The rest of the parts including: brushless electric motors, wheels, belts, pulleys, trucks, bearings, bushing, RC remote, electronic speed controllers, deck and miscellaneous hardware were all off the shelf components. The deck had to be jigsawed to accommodate the larger motor housing before sanded, primed, and painted. I disassembled the motors and used an industrial electric varnish to coat the stators and rotors plus a heavy grease for the drive shaft. All electric connections were made using a waterproof heat shrink. The casing which holds the battery and two ESC's is a 3D printed ABS shell. The attachment method due to the weight of the internal components required me to go through the board using four truss head bolts with locking nylon nuts underneath. All hardware was changed to stainless steel to limit corrosion and blue loctite was applied due to the high vibration seen by the fasteners.
